Spelling and Phonics

We use the Words their Way assessment developed by Pearson Education. We do this assessment twice a year, and ongoing based on the needs of the students. We also used Dolch phase word to assess students on their spelling of sight words.


We use a range of assessments to measure the growth of our students and to inform our teaching of mathematics. Our outcomes are adapted from Common Core Standards and integrated with the IBPYP Scope and Sequence documents. Teachers use pre and post assessments at the start and end of each unit. Formative assessment are ongoing throughout each unit.


We use PM BENCHMARKS (Early Years to Grade 2) from Australia and the PROBE (grade 3 to grade 8) reading assessment developed in New Zealand. We do these assessments twice a year, once in September and again in May.

We currently an Emergent Writing Continuum developed in the UK (EL 3 - Grade 2) and the Six Traits Writing Assessment from the US. These assessment rubrics have been adapted to meet the needs of our students at KIS.
